Written Expression 3: Tools for Writing


Designed For: Rising 9th and 10th grade students

Content: Elements of style including writing vivid sentences, sentence variety and sentence combination, use of active/passive voice, word connotation, punctuation for emphasis, paragraph development and transitions. Emphasis is on a process approach to the five-paragraph essay and includes grammar, parts of speech, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary. Pencil and paper writing requires and fosters planning, forethought and careful organization. Attention to detail, neatness, study skills and habits complement the course foundation.

Placement in the proper level of writing benefits from input from those who know the student’s writing well. Current teachers should be consulted about placement.  

It is usually helpful if an academic writing sample corrected by the teacher can also be submitted.
