Designed For: The rising 10th or 11th grade student
Content: The study of essays written in different modes--descriptive, narrative, persuasive, compare/contrast--provides a context for the landscape of academic writing. The primary goal is to develop confidence in the ability to form and express ideas at a sophisticated level.
Using model essays, students develop essays in each mode. Students practice in pre-writing, mapping, outlining, thematic focus, drafting, revising, and editing.
In addition to daily writing, activities include journaling, class discussions and tutorials. Grammar, parts of speech, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary are included. Pencil and paper writing requires planning, forethought, and careful organization. Attention to detail, neatness, study skills and study habits form the course foundation.
Materials: The Longman Reader, 6th Edition (Allyn & Bacon)
