Written Expression 5: The Polished Critical Essay

Designed For: Rising 11th grade and 12th grade students

Content: Students pursue development of the polished critical essay with specific reference to literature. Students also develop a coherent college essay draft and production of at least one final draft. Course skills include close reading of text, developing a thesis from the text, supporting thesis statements with evidence and stylistic polishing. Pencil and paper writing requires planning, forethought and careful organization. The course is a common companion course for Literature 4. Preparation for the writing section of the SAT is included.

Materials:
  • An Introduction to Literature (Longman)
  • Writing a Successful College Application Essay (Barron’s)

Placement in the proper level of writing benefits from input from those who know the student’s writing well. Current teachers should be consulted about placement.

It is usually helpful if an academic writing sample corrected by the teacher can also be submitted.
